There are many things we experienced here that do not warrant their own post, so I am just going to throw them all here…

Adventure to Taco Lake

Cheryl and David live in a suburb of Bangkok, really close to a place called Taco Lake. There is a canal that separates the area where they live from where the lake is and according to Google Maps, you have to walk a really long way around the canal to be able to get there. Kaitlyn and I decided we were going to see if there was a bridge somewhere that we would be able to cross to make the trek easier, so we walked towards this cafe where, lo and behold, there was a bridge! However, the gates to get closer to the lake were locked. I asked the girl who worked at the cafe if she knew how we could get to the lake and the next thing I know, she has commissioned a man to take us by boat to get past the gate!

So, now that we were at the lake, we took a walk around the whole thing. This was a cool place where you can waterski or wakeboard using a cable system to pull you around. We watched a few people as they went around in circles showing off for us. In our walk around the lake, we also spotted a giant monitor lizard(!), but I was not quick enough to get a picture.

Once our trip around the lake was finished, we had to figure out how to get back across the river. This was a bit trickier because our cafe man had gone back to his side of the gate and we couldn’t contact him. But there was a man sitting there smoking, so we asked him for help. Next thing we know, he’s pulling out a paddle board and he rowed us each across! I should also mention that neither of these men would let us pay them for helping us out. They did it with a smile (and probably were laughing at our stupidity the whole time)!

Cabbages and Condoms

When we were in Romania, Mel and Chris’s daughter was telling us that we had to go check out this restaurant where they had stuff made out of balloons. Mel had to clarify that these balloons were in fact condoms! Apparently this restaurant exists to promote family planning and HIV/AIDS awareness. A cool concept, indeed.

Khao San Road

We didn’t really have much of an adventure here. (I’m a bit too old for this kind of stuff!) However, we did walk around the (in)famous Khao San Road while waiting for our bus to leave for the island. This is the area where most of the backpackers stay and is known for being the party place.

Thai Transportation

Not sure what these are called but they are like super tuk tuks with an extended bed. We just started calling them ‘truck trucks’ because that is what they looked like.

Besides cars, motorbikes are the main form of transport, and can be used to haul just about everything. Including the family pet!

Songthaew – A truck with benches in the back that they cram as many people as they can into.

Food Markets

I haven’t done a very good job of documenting the food markets here, but they are a sight to behold. These happen daily and the food is so cheap! There is a wide array of just about everything, much of which would be shocking to most westerners.
